Gwen Ambler #8
Gwen Ambler is one of the most influential and successful female Ultimate players in the World. She played with, captained and coached Stanford University Superfly between 2000-2006, winning one College National title as a player and another two as a coach. From 2001-2008, Gwen wracked up four Club National titles playing with San Francisco’s Fury, and in 2008 added a WFDF World Championship to the shelf, captaining Team USA/Fury to a gold medal in Vancouver, Canada.
Despite having moved to Seattle in 2005, it wasn’t until 2009 that Gwen gave up her long distance relationship with Fury and made the transition to Seattle Ultimate. Her offensive skills run the gamut from precision hucks and break throws to outstanding layouts. She also does a great job of using her height athletically, skying opponents with a triple threat of jumping ability, perfect timing, and careful positioning. On D, Gwen uses her long strides to make up ground and apply pressure to underneath cuts, while ruling the skies deep in both man-on and zone defense, wracking up block after block on backfield jump balls. On top of all her athletic talents, Gwen’s psychological presence on the field is one of her greatest assets. She is fearless, decisive and confident, inspiring and reassuring teammates with her implacable air and ability to continuously excel in the most high pressure situations.
Gwen is also one the most influential people in the promotion of women's Ultimate and is constantly coaching, writing and organizing as much as possible outside of her UPA board duties. She also has a remarkable punctuality disability and cartoon feet, but a knack for making a good entrance.
