Texas Shootout Recap
Riot attended the Texas Shootout during May 15-16, 2010, where we came in second. All the results can be found on the Score Reporter site. Below is a more colorful recap:
Texas thunder made for some late Friday nights,
But a morning rain delay helped it all even out.
Games started at 11 with Riot ready to fight
In our team's first tournament: Texas Shootout!
We were re-joined by our faves: Aleeg and Egrizz
And welcomed Ebae for her tryout turn.
Armed with chia, cheese and coke fizz
We were ready to play and ready to learn.
We brought out the Riot gear for our first match.
Learning new cheers about fire, chaos and mace,
We racked up the Ds and many a catch
To beat our hosts Showdown at a quick pace.
Our game against ZG started as a turnover fest,
Missing on hucks, we went down 7 to 5.
We could come over that deficit playing our best,
And inspired D on universe point kept us alive.
We next met our goal for no turn points in a half.
Mixing it up on defense, we had many looks--
And with 19 Ds in one game: you do the math.
13 to 3, our Colorado game in the books.
Against Fury it was now time to bring out our most.
We tied it at 3s but then the wheels came loose.
Letting Fury have a 7 point run was nothing to boast,
With too many turns, we cooked our own goose.
Four games were down, with one day left to go.
We assessed our sunburns while chowing on Thai.
Curry, rice and laughs (plus some mango)
Then ice cream or ice baths before saying night-y nigh.
Playing Phoenix for our last pool play game,
Claire's Callahan goal and Jinny's layout D
Were each worthy of national fortune and fame.
Even better, our offense was flowing and free.
Improved handler dump sets and our cutter motion
Continued through the semi-finals vs Showdown.
Next time we'll see them will be across the ocean
So with offensive efficiency, we really went to town.
It was now finals against our familiar foe, Fury,
With raised stakes and big bucks on the line.
But again, they jumped out to a lead in a hurry.
We just didn't back down, oh no, not this time!
Generating D after D, we got three of our breaks back.
Trailing by one, we traded till 12 to 13.
Then two breaks for our lead after Calise caught a mac.
Unable to finish the comeback, we were still R-I-O-Team.
Sadly, our fundraising dream wasn't fulfilled in the end.
But all our other goals were more than met after each day.
We'll bottle for always the feeling of working hard for our friends
And Cal States is another chance to show how we play.
